Hark Upon the Gale

Williamsburg this time of year is beautiful. All of the tourists have gone home for the summer, traffic is gone, and it's just us locals. Oh, and the college students of William and Mary.

If you know anything about me, it's that I love football. I don't care what team is on or if its professional, I'll watch it. When I first moved to Virginia, Smithfield didn't have a college and we never made it to a high school home game. Then, COVID made her appearance and much of the events were cancelled. On September 11, 2021, I finally got to watch football in person again.

Being the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, I knew that attending something as patriotic and American as a football game, there would be mention of the anniversary. The announcer read off the names of those alum who were killed on that date. It was a touching moment, as was the singing of the National Anthem.

As with anything I attend, I really just love the atmosphere. To me, there is nothing better than enjoying an overpriced hotdog and nachos while watching one of America's greatest sports. Trust me, I used to attend Rutgers games all the time, even though I had no connection to the school other than living in the state where it was located.

William and Mary is an academic school. The kids who attend school there are some of the brightest minds. However, they also play some killer football. Since we got there early, we had some amazing seats and I finally felt like things had gone back to normal since the start of the COVID pandemic.

The game was a blast, but so was spending time with my family outside the house. We're not "going out" kind of people. We spend our weekends at home, order take out and watch movies on the weekends. This game was a chance to get out of the house and do something different. I didn't want the night to end.

As the game was winding down, I leaned over to my mom and told her that we should continue the tradition of going to every opening game. She agreed and with that, we left the stadium with a William and Mary win.

Go Tribe!

Signing off,
