Introducing the Newest Addition to Colony Life......Me!

I'm always looking for new places to write for. I crave the time spent with my notebook and favorite pen. I long for quiet mornings as the snow (the very little snow we get in Virginia) is falling or the rain is pouring down.

After moving to our new neighborhood (shoutout to Ford's Colony) and I got many boxes unpacked and clothes hung in the closet, I decided to scour the website for the community and see what new writing opportunities greeted me in Williamsburg. Being a pretty big tourist hot spot, I wasn't shocked to find that there are so many different magazines and newspapers in this area.

I am the kind of person who loves to throw myself into so many different projects and directions. I'm always on a mission to find what is next for me. That was exactly what happened when I ran into Colony Life.

It kind of happened on an accident. There was another neighborhood publication that I was interested in writing for, Talk of the Colony, but after researching it more and talking with the committee behind it, it wasn't a good fit. The committee suggested I reach out to Colony Life magazine.

Colony Life is a neighborhood publication that goes to all homes in the Ford's Colony neighborhood. When I met with the publisher, I was shocked to see how similar the publication was to my full time job. We met at the local Panera about potential freelancing opportunities and by the time I left that day, I was their newest freelancer!

Being the person I am, I threw myself in with both feet. I started making contacts for stories as quick as I could. My first article, appeared in the May issue, a salute to local neighborhood moms for Mother's Day. From there, the ideas grew. I'm working on a piece on my stepdad, who is a US Navy veteran who works as the Battleship Operations Manager on board USS Wisconsin, the ship he served on during his stint in the Navy. I even managed to get an article about me and my book in the magazine.

To me, there is nothing like seeing your name in print. Whenever I see my byline, it just reassures me that everything I'm doing in my career is right. I struggled a lot through college trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life so to have the satisfaction with my chosen career is a blessing.

Colony Life is another outlet for me to use my skills with journalism. I am excited every morning to head to my desk to see what sorts of fun new projects await me in my email inbox. Just like with anything I do, I am giving Colony Life my all.

If you have a story idea for Colony Life, reach out to me! My email is Megan.roche13@gmail.com and I'm happy to hear from my new neighbors anytime! I look forward to learning about what makes you who you are!

Signing off,
