Happy National Grandparent's Day!
This blog is dedicated to my Nanny (Molly), Poppy (Andrew), Grandma (Maryanne), Grandpa (Eric), Poppa (Richard), Oma (Linda), and Papa (John).
There is something about family. They are there to celebrate with you when you achieve the highest of highs and they are also there for the lowest of the lows. I'm one lucky kid since I spent so much time growing up with my wonderful sets of grandparents by my side.
Since moving to Virginia, there are many things I miss about home. I can tell you that pizza and bagels are just a few of those things. I really miss my grandparents though. They lived 10 minutes down the street from me for years. Now that we've moved, I have nowhere to go when life at home gets to be too much.
My Oma & Papa are two of the most selfless people I know. They have always put their kids and grandkids first. How many grandparents do you know that would take the entire family on vacation, year after year? They did it and we always had fun together.
I guess it's lucky me, because we moved to an area where my grandparents love to visit. I've seen them more in the last year than I have when they lived so close by. They always travel down here and spend days at a time. My Oma even cooks a full blown German dinner in a hotel kitchenette, just so she can feed us like she always did.
Me with my Papa and Oma, July 2021
My Oma always likes to tell me that grandkids complete the circle of love. I like to think that my Oma and Papa complete the circle of love. When we are together, we laugh like no other and have some of the best memories. The two of them are always telling some sort of story or sharing a memory that I wish I could remember them all.
My Papa and Oma are also the only set of grandparents that I have left on this Earth. It absolutely kills me inside when I see kids taking their grandparents for granted. Take my Papa for example. He tends to be very quiet, but when he does talk, he's always coming out with a gem of a response! His jokes are some of the best I've ever heard.
My Oma is incredible. She just has this thing about her that I can't pinpoint. Maybe it's her strength, maybe it's her kindness. I hope that I can be just like her when I'm older. I'd consider it a huge bonus if I got her cooking skills.
When my grandparents visited over July 4th weekend, I took my cousin out shopping at Barnes and Noble. When I got there, I found a book that was fill in the blank. I bought it and gave it to my grandmother. It has all sorts of questions about her life and her story. I can't wait to read it all when she finishes it.
I'm going to wrap this up with one of my favorite quotes...
"Grandparents are the perfect mix of wisdom, love, and a splash of magic"
Happy National Grandparents Day to all the grandmas and grandpas out there. You are loved beyond words.
