Postcards Please

Ever since we've moved into our new house in Williamsburg, I have been going through at least one box a day. I've found numerous knickknacks from through the years. Some may refer to me as a packrat, but I have a sentimental attachment to cards, letters, magnets, keychains, and shot glasses.

After penpal writing for a few months, I got a crazy idea to try and collect a postcard from every state in the USA. I posted that I was looking for different postcards and boy did my mailbox start to overflow!

It took me a long time, but by December 2020, I had a post card from every state in the US! The hardest to find were Delaware, Hawaii, and Mississippi. The easiest to find were Florida, California, and Texas. Wanting to grow my goal even more, I started looking for postcards outside the US!

A small sampling of some of the post cards I've received over the last year

Whenever I travel, I love finding little souvenirs for people. I've often traveled home with coffee mugs, pens, magnets, keychains, shot glasses, and so much more. It's no wonder that my suitcase is almost always over the weight limit. I love bringing home pieces to remind me of my latest travel adventure.

I think what I love the most about collecting postcards is that I can connect with people from all over the world and learn about different cultures and societies. A postcard is one of the simplest forms of communication but brings such a smile to my face.

I joined many different postcard swap sites on Facebook but I am so glad that I joined SCFP. Sundays, Coffee, Friends, and Postcards is a Facebook group that I joined just about a year ago. The main theme of their group is Sunday postcard swaps. What I love though is the ease of talking to everyone in their group.

SCFP recently started an adoption trend. The catch was you had to adopt a member to send things to twice a month and in turn, another member would adopt you. As I read through the comments, I was drawn to Marisa from New York. She's a history lover and we had a lot in common so I decided to choose her as my lucky adoptee.

I have sent her little random things in the mail throughout the year. I think my favorite memory though is when she told me that her family was vacationing in Williamsburg and she wanted to meet me in person!

We met at Cracker Barrel and had a great time together. We talked about post cards, our likes and dislikes, what we had in common, and just had an all around good time. I even got to meet her mom and sister!

Every Sunday, I anxiously wait for our postcard swap on SCFP. I always love finding touristy postcards to swap with people. As a matter of fact, I better get to swapping!

Signing off,
